SUMMARY:Toi’s Challange
DESCRIPTION:The Julians Berry Farm and Cafe Toi’s Challenge in Whakatane on Sunday\, 24 November 2019 is an annual 18km trail run and walk event which\, along with Radio 1XX 18km and Robinson Law 6km fun runs/walks\, is organised by the Whakatane Athletic & Harrier Club. \n\n\nTois Challenge 18km course follows the ‘Nga Tapuwai o Toi’ track\, which literally means ‘In the Footsteps of Toi’\, after the Maori chief Toi who ruled the area some 800 years ago. The trail twists up and down steep coastal hills and along two beautiful beaches\, through stunning bush\, up and down hundreds of steps\, eased by stunning views of the sparkling Pacific Ocean and distant islands. This challenge can be taken on as a relay team of two people. \nThe Robinson Law 6 km fun run or walk is a quick but tough run/walk up steps and hills through the bush track known locally as the ‘Birdwalk’. Once at the top\, it goes back downhill to Rex Morpeth Park via the footpath down Mokoroa Gorge. \n\n\n\nThis year’s event will be held on Sunday 24th November\, at an earlier starting time of 8am. \n\n\n\n\nOnline entries open 1st June. Official website here.\n18km run or relay $60  ($80 late entry cost after 21st November)\n1XX Fun walk or walk relay  $40\nRobinson Law 6km  $10 \nMedals for every finisher this year\, and a punnet of Julians Strawberries. \nWe will be supporting the Whakatane Kiwi Trust with a portion of every entry being donated to the Trust\, and also the opportunity to donate when you register. \nA new t shirt is being designed for this year\, costs and styles to be confirmed yet.  This will be available through online registration\, and some for cash on the day. \nThis year in the interests of eliminating waste\, we are going cup free – please bring your own cup/drink bottle/hydration pack which can be refilled at the water refill stations throughout the course. \n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:National Road Relays
DESCRIPTION:The Athletics New Zealand Road Relays is to be held in Feilding this year. \nPast years event included… \n\nAll travel (bus to & from event)\n2 night’s accommodation\nTeam van hire & petrol\nRace entry fees\nSaturday night team dinner\n\nNRR sub-committee is working on deciding which teams to send. We have committed to a certain number of beds (which will correlate into teams)\, but not exactly WHICH teams will be sent.\n\nWe cannot base our decisions about teams on the assumption that people will join the club if they are selected for a team. It is a privilege\, not a right\, for a team to be selected to compete for the club.\n\nOf our members\, over half are considered “social”. These members contribute the same amount financially to the club as “competitive” members\, and whilst not being as fast as competitive members\, contribute just as much to the club in terms of their participation and enthusiasm. While many running clubs nationwide are struggling for members\, the Hawks is healthy and a lot of this is due to our strong social membership.\n\nTherefore\, due consideration is going towards how many “social/composite” teams are going to be sent this year.\n\nAs we are now 2/3rds of the way through the R&XC season\, it is not unreasonable to expect our members to have paid their subscriptions for the season. If you wish to be considered to be part of a team for Road Relays\, you must be a registered member (a social membership is sufficient\, if selected for a competitive team you can upgrade later) by AUGUST 1st.\n\nIf we do not have enough members registered to make a grade by this date\, a team will not be sent.\n\nTeams that are currently being considered are:\nJunior Women (Captain: Charli Millar)\nMasters Men 40 (Captain: Marcus Daws/Ross Barnett)\nMM 50 (Captain: John Crane)\nOpen 60 (Captain: Kevin Knowles)\nMasters Women 35-49 (Captain: Maria Bentley)\nMW 50 (Captain: Bridget Deverell)\nSocial/Composite (Captain: Fiona Barnett)\n\nIf you wish to be considered for a team (competitive OR social)\, then please contact the Captains listed above as soon as possible and make sure that your 2019 subscription has been paid by August 1st.\n\nWe also need to see some form\, so participation at 2 of these these events is vital: Sweeney Cup – August 3rd; National XC champs – August 4th; WaiBop Road champs – August 25th; NZ Road champs – September 15th; Club Road champs – September 21st.\n\nCheers\,\nNRR sub-committee

In the late 60s\, for example\, the Centennial Pools (now Waterworld) were built smack bang in the middle of our course. It was a good running course then (with a heap of high fences) as is our current course.  Yes it does get a bit wet during the raining season\, but\, hey\, that’s cross country.  Merely running the course\, we are steeped in history. The current course was designed by Gordon Speirs in the mid 90s\, with only minor changes since.
