SUMMARY:Trophy Day
DESCRIPTION:Trophy day is a handicap start\, and is our traditional season opener. Not to be missed! Lots of trophies up for grabs\, and you may just score one\, forget\, and then be pleasantly surprised at prize giving in October. What could be better? \nThis is a handicap race from the club rooms with a staggered start based on your approximate or estimated 5km time – so in theory\, everyone should finish together. In the past there have been some very exciting finishes with the bulk of the field often only within 30 or 40 seconds. It’s a great chance for those who aren’t normally near the front to scoop one of the clubs most sought after trophies (…and to test your maths and timing skills). \nIn short: 5km handicap race. 12:30pm clubroom open; kids’ races (shorter\, non-handicapped) at 1:30pm\, and adults handicap starting at 1:50pm. BBQ and drinks afterwards.

As well as being a fantastic team race over 7 stages\, it’s also a great social weekend as a club … not to be missed. \nIt’s back at Rotorua again on Saturday 30th September\, and we’ve booked the same motel that we stayed in last year (Wylie Court). We’d like to encourage as many people as possible to make the weekend of it\, travelling over on Friday (either at lunchtime or after work) and coming back on Sunday 1st October. We’ll have the usual team dinner on Saturday night after prize giving (there’s no formal event social this year). \nAt this stage we’d like to aim for the following teams: \nJunior Women (6 runners)\nJunior Men (6 runners)\nSenior Women (7 runners)\nSenior Men (7 runners)\nMasters Men MM40 (7 runners)\nMasters Women MW35 (7 runners)\nOpen50 (7 runners)\nComposite/Social (6 runners) \nPlease could you email John Crane (john.crane1@gmail.com) to express your interest.\nAlso\, get in touch if you’re interested in taking the lead on organising a team. \nImportant Information on Eligibility:\nPrevious members need to be joined by 18th August.\nAll runners (except Composite/Social Team) must be fully registered to run \nEach person to do 3 events from the following:\n8th July Sanitorium Hill\n30th July NZXC Champs\n5th August Sweeney Cup\n19th August Waibop Road Champs\n27th August Cambridge 10km\n2nd September NZ Road Champs\n9th September Red Stag Relay\n10th September Whangamata 10k\n16th September Club Road Champs \nThe Club Road Champs will be the final opportunity to qualify and will be given the highest priority when team selections are made. Entries close the following day (17th September)\nRunners can apply for  dispensation to this criteria as long as the selectors are made aware beforehand. \nThe cost is to be worked out\, but as usual it will be heavily subsidised by the club and a great value weekend. \nFinally\, we’ll keep you posted with regular updates in the Newsletter on how the teams are shaping up and the logistics for the weekend. \nCheers\,\nJohn

In the late 60s\, for example\, the Centennial Pools (now Waterworld) were built smack bang in the middle of our course. It was a good running course then (with a heap of high fences) as is our current course.  Yes it does get a bit wet during the raining season\, but\, hey\, that’s cross country.  Merely running the course\, we are steeped in history. The current course was designed by Gordon Speirs in the mid 90s\, with only minor changes since.
