It was a beautiful day out at the Waiwhakareke Natural Heritage Reserve for our relay event last weekend. 24 runners turned out and were expertly divided into 8 x teams of 3 by Sandra. Then it was up to each team to decide on the team strategy – who would do 1 x lap, who would do 2, and who would do 3….and then which order they would be done in…

Before we knew it we were off, some fantastic efforts and some very close racing. The beauty of this format is that the winning team was not known until the first runner appeared out of the bush with around 50 metres to go…!

I think next year we will suggest a Tour de France setup with drones and live coverage of the lead group 

Anyway the winning team completed their 6 x laps (around 13km) in a touch over 55 minutes. And only less than 10 seconds separated the first 3 teams home – and in fact all teams finished within 8 minutes of the winners – so well done to Sandra on the team selections!
