Sweeney Cup 2020 Results

It was another good turnout in warm fine conditions out at Horsham Downs for this event – a handicap 8k out and back course where you assigned a start time based on your estimated 5k time, and start when the countdown clock hits your time. Then you are off, with the aim of catching those in front of you while not being caught by those starting after you…

Nice to see some new faces at the event – I hope you all enjoyed yourselves and we hope to see you again at more events in the future!

A ‘flying’ Vaughan Swale on his way to taking out the win!
Maybe it was the heat, or the wind, or the hilly course – but I heard many say it was a tough day out with times slower than expected for a number of runners…apart from Chris S however who dipped under 30 mins to take out the fastest time of the day, but it was Vaughan Swale who was the overall Sweeney Cup winner in the end, congratulations…

Sweeney Cup 2018 Results

Report by Charlie Evans

It’s the thick end of a year since I competed in a local club event. With National Road Relays looming up I figured I needed to remind the selectors that I’m still alive and keen to travel down to CHCH with a team. The sun was out and the 8k course set for what turned out to be a modest number of runners given the Taupo Marathon was on the same day. Out, then back half way, then out again and then all the way back to a challenging uphill finish at the Horsham Downs Hall. On the drive out I had carefully calculated that if I based my nominated handicap on 5 minute kilometres, then subtract one minute to apply a little pressure, I should be close.

While waiting nervously for the clock to count backwards to the 39 min mark I observed several runners including  Kovo and Dawn setting off at ‘a very conservative’ 42 minutes. I remembered then, from previous years, that this was not a flat course. Vaughan Swale was set to head off at 40 minutes and since he was hot off the press with some serious marathon competition I figured he would provide a good benchmark. The good news was he was breathing down my neck the whole way which pushed us both to a great time. The bad news was, the time was a few seconds away from my original 39 minutes estimate. (We all know how handicap results work!!)

We all retired, soaking wet, (yep, gone was the sun) up to the hall for the traditional ‘bring a plate’ afternoon tea where among other things someone was asked very nicely by the newsletter CEO to compile a  few words.

Sweeney Cup 2017 Results

Report by Shona Dewson

The Hawks, thanks to Graham Dudfield, once again managed to set a challenging 8km course around Horsham Downs for this popular and longstanding club event on Saturday, 5th August.  Setting the course is getting harder and harder each year as the new expressway cuts through Horsham Downs, and so this year we avoided having to run on Kay Road at all.  Instead the course was pretty much out and back along gravel paths and roads down Osborne and Reynolds Roads, and down to Kay Road before returning to the school.

The weather was perfect for a winter run and some very good times were achieved.  Each runner must estimate their finish time, and times were staggered to meet this handicap.  Of the field of 32, only 5 people went under their estimated time, and these were all within 01:20.  Everyone else went over their estimations with times between only 00.02 seconds and 04:59.

Evan Primmer came in first, followed by Jemima Antoniazzi who finished very strongly, and  Shona Dewson came in 3rd.

There was the usual jostling between various MM, but fastest overall male was Mike Causer in a time of 28.42.  Quickest female was Jemima in 33.50.

Nobody was lost in action this year (for any length of time), however on course shepherd Andrew Wark had to direct quite a few focused runners back up the gravel hill onto Reynolds Road.  Also thanks to Dave Southwick and Bryan Mayall for doing the marshalling, and Carla Wetzels for helping out on the registration desk.

Corey Brew took out the kid’s race all by himself and received a nice Ritchie McCaw book (almost bigger than him) for his efforts.

Unfortunately Calliope couldn’t join us as planned.  Even more unfortunately, with the new expressway nearing completion, time will tell if we will be able to use this course again.  Ideas for a new course would be most welcome if we can’t!

Lillie Harris took some great photos – view online via Facebook here and full resolution images on Flickr here.

ROAD SEASON STARTS: every weekend from now on  there is a road race until the road relay. It is vital that all team members for this pinnacle national event are race hardened so let’s front as often as possible and race hard  to prepare for the challenge of trying to be NO 1 club on the road.

The first race was the Sweeney Cup out on at Horsham Downs on a course that is being squeezed out by the urban sprawl north of Hamilton. Helen and Graham had the day organised well so thanks to them. 32 took part on a challenging course and within 6 minutes the self open handicapped field had finished so congrats to you all for honest assessment of your form. There were NO burglars and Evan Primmer was the first to finish chased hard by Jemima Antoniazzi, Shona Dewson and Wendy Harris.  Mike Causer took out the fastest time in 28.42 but B13 Mathijis Wetzels showed his promise by clocking the next fastest time of 29.50 ahead of Lance Brew 30.05 and Kent Hodgson 30.06. Jemima was the quickest female 33.50 ahead of Dawn Tuffery 35.45 and Helen Hall-King 37.31. All in all a good days road racing in the spring sun. Detailed results can be found on the clubs website . WANTED a new rural largely traffic free course close to Hamilton to replace our current Sweeney Cup course as urban sprawl gobbles up  rural farmland. See Graham if you have any suggestions for 2018.

Sweeney Cup 2016 Results

The Sweeney Cup road races on Saturday attracted an excellent field of 53 in the open 8kms.  A huge thank you to Graham Dudfield and his team for another well-run club event. With urban sprawl accelerating the club’s time racing on this circuit is fast coming to a close so we need to looking for alternative race courses. A comment from the visiting Grogan family who said to me, “the Hawks must be in good heart if this number turn up to a club race.” I agree, so well done team. I am proud to be a Hawk.

Despite the squally SW showers which whipped across the course some hard racing was seen and it was a great sight over the last few kms to witness the whole field string out and in view but closing up. Wendy Harris took out the Sweeney Cup and full results can be viewed on the club’s Facebook.

So who caught my eye and impressed? Malcolm King did a duathlon and after a 30km bike whipped through his 8km in 29.44. It was neat to catch up again with Helen Gavin and hear her news. She is still able to run strongly on 3 days a week training. John Crane is rather like a good red wine as he appears to improve with age and by a second he beat first year masters Lance Brew 28.59 to 29.00 with a solid run. Olivia Richie with a 30.08 clocking was the fastest senior women. Charli Miller had a short blast over 2km in 7.08 which should help peak her for nationals at the Domain next weekend.

Congratulations to Wendy Harris – Sweeney Cup Winner.

Sweeney Cup 2014 Results

When I arrived at the Horsham Downs hall a few people were already there. I got out of my car to a fresh breeze, best I leave the track pants on for a while.

We had the advantage/disadvantage of choosing our own handicap.
Shall I use my cross county time? Shall I use my park run time? What did I do last year?  Or hmmm shall I see what time everyone else takes?
It was a very interesting result with quite a few running a lot faster than what they thought they would/could do.

The kids went first with their handicap times worked out quickly.  Lucy Farrell was the first home while Charli Miller had the fastest time.

The clock for the adults then started and a few took off, as the clock counted down it got closer to my easy run with Bridget, off we went chatting. Within 20 metres we experienced the headwind, that made the fast downhill a slower run.

The new course is great for a club run, you get to see everyone running towards you or past you and the hill to the finish gets everyone digging deep for that last bit of energy.

Chris Rogers was the 1st home but unfortunately ran a lot faster than he thought he would. Bridget and Maureen 2nd and 3rd racing, not steady running as first thought. Terry Hannett through years of experience and good steady running got the closest to the clock and walked away the winner. Jai had a fantastic run and broke the course record.

Afternoon tea was worth hanging around for with lots of chocolate, cakes and other goodies. Thanks to the organisers, a great afternoon out.

Sweeney Cup 2013 Results

Sweeney Cup was held at Horsham Downs on Saturday and a huge thank you to Graham Dudfield who was day organizer. As the club has no handicapper I like his idea of self handicapping which seemed to work well. A strong walking group turned up including three octogenarians. There was an impressive walk from Barb Wilson who did 1.01.40 for the 8.1km

Wendy Harris won the Sweeney Cup in her first season of serious running but she had to run hard to hold off a fast finishing masters women trio of Maureen Leonard, Tracey Greenwood and Helen Hall-King.

As the first serious club road trial for the national road relays there were some quite determined efforts. Emily Roughan now being guided by John Tylden had a strong run and was scything through the 51 person field to take fastest womens time with 30.18. Katy Dawson also had a strong run to be quickest masters in 30.57 with Kirsten Milne close up in 31.06.

Kerry Suter was back marker and caught 20 places to take fastest time honours in 26.22.

Impressed with the attitude of the masters men who all started together and had a head to head full on hard race which is needed to be successful at national road relays. Tony Olsen cracked on the pace from the start to clock 27.40 followed by Kent 8 seconds back with just three seconds ahead of John Crane. Well done guys.
