Club Cross Country Champs 2022 Results
Against all predictions the conditions were perfect for a cross country event.
Against all predictions the conditions were perfect for a cross country event.
Report by Garry Wilson
Saturday saw the 51st running of the Tauranga Cross Country. Conditions were mild, firm and dry. Even the dreaded ‘hill’ could be attacked without spikes. Although I did my very best to make it look much harder than it was.
This is an event that at its peak attracted large numbers and quality fields. First run, and won in 1971 by Olympian Mike Ryan, the list of Male winners is a veritable who’s who of Waikato Bay of Plenty Distance runners. From Jack Foster and Paul Ballinger, through to Ben Ruthe and Aaron Pulford. There are also a fair number of Hawks also, with ‘older’ names such as Alan Stock and Euan Robertson alongside more recent winners including John Crane and Jai Davies-Campbell. (Note: John won in 1999 & 2015. An incredible 16 years between victories.
To this list of Champions, we can add the name of Ben Bidois. Ben ran a controlled race to gradually draw away from the field eventually winning comfortably by just under a minute in 27.51. Ben looks in great form for upcoming races.
We can also claim the Women’s Champion, with current NZ Cross Country title holder Kerry White, having to work harder for her win, over her slightly younger rivals. Kerry held on to win by 5 seconds in 15.41.
There were some good results by Hawks athletes in the earlier races:
Jack and Max Stirling 2nd and 3rd in the U14 Boys.
Nisha Moorfield and Carenza Elley 3rd and 4th in the U16 Girls.
Renee Carey and Letizia Hay 3rd and 4th in the W18
Alicia O’Conner 2nd in the W20
Claire Liang 4th in the U10 Girls
Louie Endres 2nd in the M18 (beaten by one second)
Grahame Clarkin 2nd MM65+
Apologies for not listing everyone, including the doddery old men in the Masters section.
I look forward to the rest of the Cross Country season, culminating in the NZ Champs in Taupo. Should be some great racing.

And there are lots of photos of the event available on the Tauranga Ramblers Facebook page <<here>>
There is even a short video which really shows how steep those hills were…Check it out <<here>>
A good number of keen folk sporting their Hawks colours zipping around the course, giving it their all…
With around 20 runners competing under blue skies in the first of the official races for the season – the Reduction Relay.
Report by Mike Riley
What a beautiful day following a frosty early start to arrive in Taupo by about 10.00 AM. Why so early you might ask, well to help Mike & Wendy Harris to erect the gazebo when they were kind enough to bring it along, it’s always nice to have a base to find fellow members and leave gear bags there.
As there weren’t a great number of Hawks competing, I’m going to try and mention everyone who did run, they are just as important as those few who manage to place in their grades. If I have missed anyone it’s not intentional although I did notice a couple of names who aren’t recorded as belonging to any centre or club and I’m pretty sure they weren’t members but I have excluded their performances from this report as I assume they currently aren’t members.
First off were the G10 and B10 grades with our only members Claire Liang finish 6th in 5.10.1 for her 1000 metres in the girls race and her brother Austin who was 8th in the boys recording 5.25.0. Next up was older sister McKenzie who competed over 2000 metres finishing 14th in the G12 grade in 10.24.6.
The G14 grade over 3000 metres had two club members competing with Carenza Elley finishing 11th in 12.28.8 followed by Nisha Moorfield close behind in 14th running 12.39.8. That could be 2-2 between these girls this winter so a bit of club rivalry developing here. In the boys G14 race we were represented by Jack Conder who was 15th in 14.22.1 for 3000 metres.
No entrants in the G16 grade but Boh Ritchie who couldn’t make in time for this ran in the W18 grade to take out the NI title recording 14.31.9 for 4000 metres and I’m pretty sure it was a course record for her age and distance. Well done Boh. The only M18 member competing was Jack Murray who was 13th in 17.49.4
The W18 and the W20 grades both started together as both ran 4000 metres. In the W20 grade our first member home was Jemima Antoniazzi who was just back from injury and finished 5th in 15.30.4 and was well backed up by Sophie Harris in 8th who recorded 16.01.3 then Tara Sacke 10th in 16.25.7 and Gemma Horan 13th in 20.30.2. The winner of the W20 race was Hannah Gapes who also recreated a new race record.
We had two members in the keenly contested M20 race with Ben Bidois finishing 3rd in 16.07.3 and the winner recording 16.05.5. Our second member was Alex Brackenbury who was 15th in 18.05.3
In the older ranks of masters and seniors, there was a smattering of club members competing. In the MW50-54 grade, Karen McCready finished 4th in 23.20.3 for her 5000 metre event and in the MW60-64, also over 5000 metres as Wendy Fox who was 6th in 28.09.4.
John Bowe finished 2nd in the MM45-49 grade recording 22.13.0 for 6000 metres supported by Peter Conder in 10th recording 26.57.8. Moving on to the MM50-54 grade saw Mike Harris also finishing 2nd over 6000 metres in 23.42.3, Gary Wilson 2nd in the MM55-59 grade in 25.16.0 and finally Kevin Knowles appears to have been 3rd in the MM60-65 after some confusion at the prizegiving being awarded the silver medal so this may not be finalised yet.
The only senior member who competed was Kerry White in the SW grade where she finished a good 5th placing in 18.21.1 just over 30 seconds from the first placed athlete.
Overall there was some very closing racing, especially in the combined age groups which boosted numbers in many races. It was an enjoyable day of cross-country and it’s such a great course.

The Gilchrist Rosebowl Cross Country event was held on the grass area on the eastern side of Hamilton Lake.
Kids ran 2 x 1k laps and the adults did 2 x 1.92k laps.
Great to see so many turn out (around 45 runners – 44 human and 1 canine) and looking great in the Hawks colours…The weather turned it on and we had a brilliant day – lots of good hard running, a highlight being a great run by Pat Gallagher resulting in a finish line sprint for 3rd overall with Charli Miller….Awesome to watch.
Congratulations to all those competing, you can check out the full results for this event <<here>>

Report by Dave Gunn
After Kevin and I had a bit of a rushed course marking (I am blaming heavy traffic and catching every red light across town to get there…) – we managed to make it back to the club in time to see Lucie had already very efficiently collated, co-ordinated, and corralled everyone into their respective teams (11 in total).
35 runners arrived (although a couple a bit late eh Rhys?) and all appeared chipper and excited to be there (nervous excitement maybe?).
Eventually we all jogged up to the start of the course on the grass alongside Cobham Drive. The course is a 2km loop on the grass (expertly marked out almost to the metre by Kevin and I – and I am claiming this was not a fluke, but instead expert use of the “eye-crometer”). In due course the teams all lined up and we were off…
The first lap of this event is always a bit of an unknown, with each team having to run together – and so there is lots of glancing around at who is in the other teams, who to look out for, and who will be “laying it down” on the final lap to the finish line…
There are a few pretty good little hills and some longish soft grass to run on, which seems to sap the energy pretty effectively…
Lap one came and went, and the 1-lappers all dropped off to then become team cheerleaders and excited spectators (once they caught their breath…). There was a lot of jostling for position in this second lap, with some of the faster teams at this point moving up the rankings (Chloe and Joe effortlessly breezing past us at this point)…but all could change with the last lap runners pushing hard…
As the teams came through and the 2-lap runners dropped off, the speedsters shifted up a gear and there were a few great times as a result – with Hayden Waddell and Richard Ellison impressing with 2k final lap times of 6:56 and 7:01 respectively…!
However there has to be a winner, and in first place and with a combined team time of 25:31 was Rhys Mildon leading his team of Peter Horan and Garry Wilson. And 35 seconds later in a time of 26:06 was Andrew Wark, Boh Ritchie and Fleur Marillier. 3rd team home in 26:35 was Marc Scott, Layton Mace and Natalie Care.
Great running by all – and just as impressive was the expert (scientifically based) team selection by Lucie (even endorsed by David Southwick!) which meant there was only 3 minutes separating all 11 teams over the finish line..! Well done Lucie.
Final kudos to Kevin and I for the course marking – no one got lost, no controversy, and my Garmin had the final distance of 3 laps at 6.01km…! Not too bad considering we didn’t have course marking gurus Glenn or Andrew directing us…!
Anyway – everyone seemed to have a good time based on the chatter at the club afterwards during the afternoon tea (I even overheard some combined club wisdom dishing out relationship advice…?) Finally, I think this is a fantastic format for a club event as you often end up running with others you would not normally get to run with…Great fun, bring on the next one!

….And for those who like to analyse results and all the “what if’s”…Mike has added a table to the results page to compare the order we were all lined up for the team selection (Pre-Race order in the right column), with the actual lap time order (Race Results in the left column)….and has marked the number of spots (dif) this would have bumped you up or down that list…He then re-jigged the team selections based on this revised order, and added up the combined times to determine where every team would have come had we lined up in the order that matched our actual times…And it appears, no matter how we slice and dice the results, that Rhys Mildon still managed to come out on top! Well done Rhys…

The Hawks singlets were prominent at the Waikato Bay of Plenty Cross Country Champs at Waipuna Park in Tauranga on Saturday – with many Hawks runners taking podiums in their respective grades. Well done to all those who raced and congrats to those who placed.
128 runners showed up for the Hawks Cross Country Champs this weekend, gathering from far and wide and attracting an array of talented, determined and committed runners. It was wonderful to see so many kids giving it a go and absolutely smoking it. Congratulations to everyone that conquered the mud, whether you took out the win, the club trophy, set a
new personal best or simply enjoyed testing yourself.

Race Report by Joe Mace
The Reduction Relay was held on Saturday with the weather threatening and a great turnout of 44 runners. Upon registering at the clubrooms we formed into three groups… those that wanted to do one lap, two laps, or three laps of a 2km course. We were each then put into a team of three comprising one from each of the three groups. After making sure we had introduced ourselves to our fellow team members we had a nice jog up to the start line near the Cobham bridge to get everyone warmed up for the event.
The course was on the big grassy area beside Cobham drive and included some challenging traversing up and down the slope between the river path and the road, and a section running beside the river path. One part of the course even featured a dead possum to pass on the road verge!
It was a mass start with all runners sticking together in their teams of three. Early in the first lap the teams quickly found their position and worked together to maximise their speed. At the end of each lap, one member from each team dropped out. In the second lap things started to heat up as the pace of the different teams changed. During this lap the field was cleaned up by Boh Ritchie who was running solo doing one easy lap and one fast lap (with the fast lap time of 7:50!!!). At the start of the final lap Sunil (team mates with Layton and Shona) was leading the field with Marc (team mates with Mark and Lillie) in second place and Joe (teammates with Amy and Keri) in third. As the final lap progressed John-Paul (team mates with Amber and Cameron) started coming through the field steadily. Meanwhile, Matt Scott took off at a blistering pace on his last lap coming from near the back of the field. About halfway through the lap John-Paul passed Joe and Marc and went on to run down Sunil within the last few hundred meters to take the win (time 27:56). All teams finished within two and a half minutes of the winner showing how competitive this race was.
Congratulations to the team of Amber, Cameron, and John-Paul for the win.

Report by Lucie Kibblewhite
Saturday saw the Gilchrist Rosebowl at the lake. An ever popular event we had 32 adults and 7 children racing.
We started with the children’s race first and Andrew volunteered to lead the kids out on the first lap. However, a misunderstanding and some incorrect course marking by Dave and his crew meant Andrew went off in the correct direction, which confused the kids a little as they had listened to Dave’s flawed instructions! It was all sorted out quickly and the race was on…. Boh Ritchie brought home the kid’s in an impressive 5:52.
Luckily Dave’s briefing for the adults run was actually correct, and everyone started without a hitch. As everyone came round past the start/finish line for the first time there wasn’t a lot of time separating groups, however, the second time of climbing the hill to the water tower put some space between people. Hayden Waddell won the adults race in 14:11, Charli Miller coming in second at 14:25 and Mike Harris rounding out the top three in 14:50. A special mention must go to Lily and Vaughan for the sprint finish.

Good ole’ Taupo XC huh – conditions were perfect and the 18 (apologies if I missed anyone above!) Hawks that rocked on up R.E.P.R.E.S.E.N.T.E.D. Huge congratulations to Bridget for dominating her race and crossing the line first. Ditto to Joseph Morgan especially in claiming the course record! Race of the day had to be the Gentleman’s 50+ category. It was competitive, tight and “business time” from start to finish. Chris, John and Glenn did us proud and had Batman, Shona and I excited running around all over the course cheering them on (i.e. this became the warm-up for my race). I admire you guys so much……although those pain faces really got me nervous for my race. Well done Chris, taking out your age-group win and for edging out Craney ?.

Personally, I’m an XC novice and had reservations about running. I actively avoided XC at school and have ever since! In fact, I remember the Athletics coach drawing me out of history class (way back in 1996) and giving me a right bollocking for failing to participate in the school XC. My excuse, fear avoidance. I was probably recovering from ankle sprain #254 courtesy of netball which was far more important that running was back then. But anyhow, we move on and race experience for road champs in September is required so a run over undulating hills on grass seemed logical?!
As we all know though, XC is brutal. Those little hills that we happily trot over during a long easy run feel like Mt Everest when we try to run fast up them. Lap 1 went well enough (i.e. legs burning but lungs were ok). Lap 2, yeah by this stage I completely doubted any ability I did have to jump the hurdles without face planting and losing my teeth, so I stopped and walked over them instead – much to spectators’ amusement. It cost me time, but I still managed to get on the podium. Happy to take that ?.

This year Hawks decide to open our champs up to the other clubs in the Centre in an effort to encourage some better racing for our and the other clubs members . The day dawned nice and fine and with Lance leading the team and myself, Jai, Nick Freke helping, getting an early look at the course during the setup. Footing was firm with very little mud, making fast times a possibility.
People started rocking up from about 1pm and the plan of inviting the other clubs looked to have been a success with visitors from a far as Taupo, Thames and Tauranga travelling along with a great turnout from Cambridge. The kids race had the biggest field we have had for years with 14 starters.
In the main race we had one field with the 3k,5k,6k and 9k all racing together. This format gives everyone a better chance of having someone to race, although once someone turns off early it can be a little lonely for a bit after.
A big thanks to Lance and the setup and take down team who once again did a great job marking the course, Graham of course for his timing services and all the other helpers we had on the day. Running down that hill to the turnaround tree it was also great to see so many supporters cheering us runners on and offering helpful encouragement. Hopefully next year the club will again open the race up and have another days great racing.

On Saturday 15 th June we met at the Taitua carpark at the end of Taitua Road.
We selected EVENLY MATCHED TEAMS of three runners each, from the people that attended. This was a standard format relay of one 3km lap of the Arboretum for each runner. It was a perfect day in the Arboretum and most went for a full lap warm-up before teams were picked. This is an interesting and challenging course, twisting through the pebbled pathways of the reserve. After some intense battles in the earlier relay legs, the finishing runners were still battling up the steep switch-back hill to the finish line.
Thanks for the support again this year, with Garth Ritchie, Trish Stockman and Peter Horan taking the times. A very enjoyable event.

Report by Tanja Miller
The annual Tauranga Cross Country was held on Saturday 25th May 2019 at Waipuna Park.
The weather was absolutely gorgeous and if anything it was a little too hot! There was lots of sunshine, no wind and the track was firm underfoot.
Unfortunately I was injured and unable to run, which left me feeling a bit sorry for myself! However I did get to watch some great racing from the sidelines and cheer on my children when they ran. It was disappointing to see small fields this year but those who did compete raced with enthusiasm and dedication.
The highlight for me, as a triathlete myself, was the women’s 4km event. The race was dominated by up and coming youth triathletes who were the 1st, 2nd and 3rd runners home. A very strong Hannah Knighton ( U/20) was shadowed by Charli Miller (U/18) for most of the race. Hannah managed to get away to take the win in a time of 15 mins from Charli who was 8 seconds back. Third place went to Olivia Cummings (U/18) a talented triathlete from Tauranga in 15:23.
Once again Tauranga Ramblers produced a well run event with lots of prizes. It was especially exciting for the younger runners who each received a little goody bag after their race. My son enjoyed the banana, mini bag of chips and Mars bar that were in his. It was a nice reward for having to run up the dreaded Waipuna hill!
Thanks Tauranga Ramblers and see you in 2020! (hopefully I’ll be able to run at the next one!)
Reduction Relay results held on the 2km loop course located between the clubrooms and Cobham Drive.

The course is firm, fast and flowing, and later you can enjoy the free thermal pools at the river’s edge behind the venue.
