Club Road Champs 2014 Results

Last month we were both looking forward to Club Champs, training was going well and we were both anticipating PB’s on the day.  Instead we found ourselves on the side lines both injured, happily cheering everyone else on but with a sense of “what could have been”.

The annual Hawks Club Road Champs produced a little bit of everything weather wise with rain, sun and a cold wintry blast of wind throughout the afternoon. This did not seem to dampen enthusiasm with over 100 people turning up to either cheer others on or join the 68 members running across all age categories.

The kids races were well run with many great efforts put in.  Well done to Levi Budd who was particularly proud of himself for running the whole distance without stopping and this was topped off with him winning a movie voucher spot prize.

In the Women’s races, Emerson Deverell and Grace Ritchie fought it out until the last lap where Emerson increased the gap to win by 21 seconds.  Of particular note was Sandra Jensen, definitely one to watch as she keeps getting faster and faster.

A couple of fierce battles occurred throughout the 10km final race of the day.  The first between the younger men of Tim, Jacob and Theunis with Tim coming out as winner not only of this battle but the 10km race overall winner also.  The second battle between Kerry, Kent and John finally ended with Kerry over the line first (just) with Kent hot on his heels and John not far behind.  Thus proving that age is no barrier.  Marc Scott was seeking photographic evidence to support a 35:59 PB.

Check out the great photos online both on the Hawks Facebook page or the Hawks website. Photos thanks to Graham Dufield, Mike Harris, Dawn Tuffery and Nick Freke.

Redwoods Relays 2014 Results

Hawks sent a total of seven teams over to a rather dreary and wet Long Mile Road in Rotorua for the 36th Redwood Relays. The top half of the course was in pretty good condition but the lower half through the parkland had people dodging and tip toeing around puddles.

Trophy Day Results 2014

The first Club Race of the season saw a modest field of 27 compete over the traditional riverbank 5km course on Saturday. This was a self-handicapped event, with runners entering their own estimated times. The club clocks were all out on loan, but a bit of improvisation with a few iPhones managed to get everyone away at their selected start times.

First to the finish line was Gordon Speirs – back for his first race in goodness knows how long and not really sure if he was going to be running, hobbling or walking round. He managed to put in a good run … too good, excluding himself from the competition coming in more than 2 minutes ahead of his handicap. Fleur Marilier came in next to take the Cameron Cup for the first female on handicap. New member Dale Bull came in 10 seconds later to claim the Ready Cup. Then there was a deluge of runners … the next 21 runners coming through within just over a minute. Excellent time estimates from everyone (must be the summer 5km series helping with accuracy) … but not so good if you were trying to write down finishing order and times as a backup to the timing system (so glad it worked OK)!

In the Kids 10yrs and under race Donovan Farrell took the honours for the boys and Hayley Halford for the girls. The girls 14yrs and under was won by Charli Miller (no entries for the boys race).

Many thanks to all those who mucked in and helped setup, marshal and clean up afterwards.

Hawks Open Day 2014

There was a great turn out of both existing, returning and new members on the 2014 Open Day on what was a beautiful and hot autumn’s day.  It was great to see so many people sign up for the new season and complete their membership forms.

Glenn (Club President) shared some opening words and then Bryan Mayall (Patron) shared his history with the Harriers and Hawks before officially declaring the 2014 season open. (See above opening address).
Everyone then headed off outside for a 5km pack run on the familiar course up to Sandford Park and back.  The speed demons lined up at the front, the bulk of the pack lining up next followed by all the children who were doing the 2km distance.

Kris Moore – was given his first responsibility as Vice Captain which was to act as lead bike and head off to the turnaround point with the orange road cone to clearly mark the spot of return – particularly for all the newbies.  This very quickly turned to disaster when he got a puncture not far from the start.  Some very kind runner (identity unknown) took it upon themselves to lay out some pine cones at the turnaround – not quite the same as the bright orange cone but it seemed to do the trick as the message was passed down the line to look out for the pine cones.

A great day was had by all with a real sense of excitement for the upcoming season.

Sing Relay 2013 Results

Saturday’s Sing Relay saw a good number of entrants, and an interesting cross-section of starters.

Helen Hall-King quite literally kept everyone in line, while the selection process of pairing up the team-mates took place. The format this year was the same as last year with the Hawks Car Park used to form a line, and pair up the team-mates. Glenn Sexton mistakenly thought that being at the head of the line meant being first to the Bar. Sorry Mate, you had to run first.

The joy of this format means Club-mates were paired up with those they wouldn’t normally race with or against. Young/old/male/female/fast and slow were matched together depending on where you stood in the line-up.

The course for the 16 pairs followed the river path out under Cobham bridge to the turnaround. The faster of the pair did 5+ kms while the slower did less than 5kms depending on where they met their partner.

Tactics? Go Hard! Turnaround. Go Hard back to the Finish. If both of you gave it everything you got all the way then you would go close to being first across the line.

Who took the trophy? Mary Bollen and Evan Primmer fought off Kris Moore and Shona Dawson for line honours, with several others very close behind. Apologies, no times were taken, and the results were a bit sketchy, but it didn’t matter much as everyone appeared to enjoy themselves regardless.

Big thanks to Neil Pitts for the junior race organisation (won by Charli Miller). Thanks also to Helen, Oscar, Dawn, Tyla and others.

Overall the general consensus was that this was a Fun event, and should be retained in this format next year. I have to agree.

Sing Relay Report by Garry Wilson

P.S. Apparently the building owners from across the road from the clubrooms are now looking for new Garden Irrigation hoses. Where did we get those race Battens from again?

Trophy Day 2013 Results

A very pleasant morning turned to rain about an hour before the start of the first race. The weather plus other events may have contributed to numbers being down for the same event for previous years.

However, the rain eased off just in time for the first race, the combined 2km and 3km events for those 14 years and under (12 starters).

By the time the 5km started (33 starters), the weather had cleared up nicely even though there were a few thunder claps close by which kept us looking skyward.

This was a handicap event, so off we went at our staggered computer generated start times (that computer has no heart!) from outside the Bridgewater building, under the Bridge St bridge and up the grass past the bandstand (yuck/gasp) onto Victoria St and then making our way down the river path to Cobham Bridge and return.

All got back safely to enjoy a well deserved afternoon tea and bbq where there was plenty of good natured banter and a few lies shared.

Special thanks must go to Base Manager John Crane and his wonderful team of volunteers who all contributed to the smooth running of the day.

All Trophy Day winners and results are listed separately.
