Report by Lucie Kibblewhite

Trophy Day is one of my favourite races of the season. There are plenty of trophies on offer, it’s a handicap race so for a while as a slower runner you can be in the lead and for new members to the club it’s a lovely start to the season on a picturesque course.

Last year, I was informed that the course was a little short (4.8km). So Christian Conder and I set off to mark out the course, including a little extra distance through memorial park. Christian and I just hoped that the chalk markings wouldn’t get too washed away in the rain.

25 runners and 6 kids registered to run, with much debate and sandbagging amongst the adults as to what time they would set off and who would be the fastest.

The kids ran 2km along the river path, with Rich Ellison at the turnaround. Some great running all around but TeAmotawa Steward was in first which an incredible time at 8min18secs.

The rest of the runners started at the top of Grantham Street, and thanks to Graham and his timing and instruction everyone got away fine and at their allotted time. Leila Steward crossed the line first, with Paul Ewart in second. Pleased to announce that this year no one was disqualified by Graham’s cut off time, but maybe this is because my ‘little extra distance’ ended up being 0.45km meaning the run was 5.25km in total – next year I promise to make it bang on 5km!

Harry Coles was fastest across the course in a time of 18:22. Full results are on the website, including some handy magic by Graham for you 5km equivalent time.

Well done to our trophy winners:

1st New Female – Leila Steward

1st New Male – Martin Carroll

1st Male – Paul Ewart

1st Female – Monique Peattie.

Thanks to Christian, Rich, Emily and Brooke, Sandra and Graham for their help today.

Next week is the interclub relay at the Narrows old golfclub, a cross country event  hosted by Cambridge, see you there!
